Messages and their settings

There are two types of messages; Information and Help. You can configure the level of these messages using the 'Global Settings > Messages Settings' which you can access from the Manager task Main menu. This is explained in detail in the Tutorial section:
here

1. Information Messages

1.1 Location Messages

These tell you where you are in the system in terms of the current task and control. More specifically, a location message may include a transfer message such as 'Switching to', followed by the name of a component, followed by its type which can be a task, or any of the types of control such as a List. In the case of controls, the message may include additional information such as the name of an item in a list.

Also included are focus messages which tells the user if SpeakOn gain or lost focus.

There are three levels of location messages:

  1. 'Maximum' (the default) - the information includes the location change, the name of the task or control and its type. The focus messages are detailed.

  2. 'Medium' - the information includes the name of the task or control and its type. The focus messages are detailed.

  3. 'Minimum' - the information includes the name of the task or control only. The focus gain message is short, the focus lost message is omitted.

1.2 Internet messages

An internet message tells you when you start SpeakOn if you are connected to the internet. There are two levels of this message; a long message of a more explanatory nature and a short message which simply says if the internet is connected or not.

Note that Location and Help messages are spoken by the system automatically. You can find out where you are any time from the Help menu by pressing the 'Help [F1] key or directly by pressing the # 'Help' [Shift + F1] key.

2. Help Messages

2.1 Task tip messages.

A task tip message gives you a short help tip on how to use the current task. There are no settings available for this message.

You can always get a help tip on the current task from the Help menu by pressing the 'Help' [F1] key.

2.2 Control tip messages

A control tip message gives you a short help tip on how to use the current control.

The settings for this message enable you to choose when a control tip message is spoken automatically. There are three possible level settings:

  1. 'All controls' - a control tip message is announced every time the focus changes between controls.

  2. 'Some controls' (the default) - a control tip message is announced when the focus changes between controls but only for those controls where experience shows that users may not be sure what action to take.

  3. 'Never' - A control tip message is never announced when the focus changes between controls.

Please note that regardless of the Control Tip Message Level setting above, you can always get a help tip for the current control from the Help menu.
