Help context menu

The Help context menu presents a list of all available help context features in SpeakOn.

Press the 'Help' [F1] (1 long) key to toggle the Help context menu.

The Help Context menu list contains the following seven items:

1. Turn Input Help on

2. Main Keys sub-menu

3. Keys available for the current control sub-menu

4. Where am I?

5. Tip for the current task

6. Tip for the current control

7. Online SpeakOn manual information

Select the feature you want in the usual way.

These Help menu items are explained below.

1. Turn Input Help on

The Input Help mode allows you to explore the functionality of all the keys.

When you select this menu item this mode is turned 'On' from the Help menu.

When the Input Help mode is 'On' you can explore the functionality of all the keys. Simply press the various keys on the standard keyboard or the numerical keypad; the key's name and action functionality is announced.

To turn the Input Help mode 'Off', press the 'Help' [F1] (1 long) key.

2. Main Keys sub-menu 

The Main Keys sub-menu contains a list of all the Main keys on the standard keyboard or the numerical keypad together with their associated actions.

This feature is useful if you need to remind yourself of the Main keys you need to press to invoke a particular action. Scroll up and down the list until you find the key and action you want. Then press the 'Select' [Enter] (5) key to invoke the action and leave the menu. If you are browsing the menu and would like to leave the menu without invoking an action, press any menu key such as the 'Menu'
[Alt] (9) key.

3. Keys Available for the current control sub-menu 

The Keys available for the current control sub-menu contains a list of all the context keys for the current control on the standard keyboard or the numerical keypad together with their associated actionss.

This feature is useful if you need to remind yourself of the context keys you need to press to invoke a particular action. Scroll up and down the list until you find the key and action you want. Then press the 'Select' key to invoke the action and leave the menu. If you are browsing the menu and would like to leave the menu without invoking an action, press any menu key such as the 'Menu' key .

Note that the appropriate key is reported automatically, based on whether you use the standard keyboard or the numerical keypad.

4. Where am I? 

This feature tells you where you are in SpeakOn and is accessed somewhat differently using the Standard keyboard and Numerical keypad (NumPad).

Standard keyboard

You can access this feature from the Help menu by pressing the Help [F1] key. The 'Where am I?' item is fourth on the list.
Alternatively to access this feature directly press the:
# Help [Shift + F1] key
SpeakOn announces the names of the current task and control.

To find the current control only, press the:
* 'Help' [Ctrl + F1] key

To find the current item in the current control (for example, a track in a playlist or an article in a newspaper), press the:
*# 'Help' [Ctrl + Shift + F1] key

Numerical keypad (NumPad)

You can access this feature from the Help menu by pressing Menu (1 long) key. The 'Where am I?' item is fourth on the list.
Alternatively to access this feature directly press the:
'Where am I?' (3 long) key

With each successive long press action, it cycles between the announcement of the current item, control and task in focus.

5. Tip for the current task 

This feature gives you help tips on using the current task.

A short help tip for using the current task is spoken.

6. Tip for the current control 

This feature gives you help tips on using the current control.

A short help tip for using the current control is spoken.

7. Online SpeakOn manual information

This feature enables you to obtain context sensitive information from the manual directly from SpeakOn using your default internet browser.

The 'Online SpeakOn manual information' sub-menu contains a list of context sensitive information.

When you select any of the sub-menu items, SpeakOn launches your default browser automatically with the desired section of the manual ready for you to read.

This manual is always revised for the latest version of SpeakOn. If your version of SpeakOn is not the latest one, you will be asked to update your version first (as the manual is not relevant to your current version of SpeakOn). After updating your version of SpeakOn to the latest one from the Main menu which is a procedure taking only a few minutes, you should be able to view the manual from the Help context menu.

As your default internet browser is used to view the manual, you will need your screen reader or magnifier running before you select this option from the Help menu. You can switch between SpeakOn and your default internet browser in the usual Windows way [Alt + Tab]. Please note that you can always view this manual from the relevant SpeakOn page on the SpeakOn website at:
http://www.speakon.org.uk

TouchScreen and TouchPad operations

The following are equivalent gestures to the actions mentioned above:

Help {swipe left > down} - Brings up the 'Help Context Menu'.
'Where am I?' {swipe down > right > up} - With each successive gesture, cycles between the announcement of the current item, control and task in focus.

Using Input Help mode with the TouchPad:

The first item in the Help context menu is the 'Turn Input Help On'. When the Input Help mode is 'On' you can explore the actions of any Key swipe gesture. Simply perform any of these gestures and its name and action are announced.

Similarly if you perform an Action swipe gesture, its name and action is announced.

To turn the Input Help mode 'Off', use the Escape gesture {swipe left > right}.

Using Input Help mode with the TouchScreen:

The first item in the Help context menu is the 'Turn Input Help On'. When the Input Help mode is 'On' you can explore the actions of any Key swipe gesture. Simply perform any of these gestures and its name and action are announced.

Similarly if you perform an Action swipe gesture, its name and action is announced.

You can also find the action of any key using the on-screen KeyGrid interaction; simply slide your finger until you reach the desired key, lift your finger and the key name and action are announced.
Note that with this method you get specific context information based on the control in focus and any function or modifier set.

To turn the Input Help mode 'Off', use the Escape gesture - swipe down > left.
