Alphanumeric input settings

The 'Alphanumeric input' feature's goal is primarily to enable efficient typing in SpeakOn with touch devices that do not contain a Standard keyboard. The TouchScreen is therefore the most realistic scenario for using the 'Alphanumeric input' feature. A NumPad and TouchPad can also be used with 'Alphanumeric input' but these are intended primarily as learning tools.

Information on how to use the 'Alphanumeric input' feature including the settings outlined below is provided in
The 'Alphanumeric input' section of this tutorial

The 'Alphanumeric input settings' task enables you to change the settings for 'Alphanumeric input' interaction. This task can be started from the Manager. Go to the Main menu by pressing the 'Menu' [Alt] (9) key. Select the
Global Settings > 'Alphanumeric input settings' menu item and the 'Alphanumeric input settings' task will start.

The 'Alphanumeric input settings' task contains 12 controls. When you start this task, the focus is placed at the first control; the 'Alphanumeric input enabled' CheckBox control. You can move the focus between controls in the usual way by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key.

The following controls are available:

'Alphanumeric input enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable 'Alphanumeric input'. When enabled, the 'Alphanumeric input' mode is available. In addition, the 'Alphanumeric input practice' task and the 'Alphanumeric input spell check dictionary manager' task tools are also available.

'Letters enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the Letters Key table to enter text.

'Numbers enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the Numbers Key table to enter text.

'Punctuation enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the Punctuation Key table to enter text.

'Symbols enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the Symbols Key table to enter text.

'Word entry on start' CheckBox

Check this check box to set 'Word entry' to be the default after starting SpeakOn. (When this CheckBox is unchecked the default is 'Key entry'.)

'Word entry' is required if you want to use Braille, and with all entry methods, if you want to use SpellCheck or AutoComplete.

'Braille enabled' List control

This list control allows you to enable and choose the type of Braille available for entering text.

Using the [Up] (8) and [Down] (2) keys, scroll up and down the list to choose between Braille disabled, Braille Grade 1 and Braille Grade 2.

'Braille swap Select with Down keys enabled' (only applies to the Numerical keypad) CheckBox control

Check this check box to swap the Select and Down keys when using the NumPad with Braille.

You might find it more convenient to enter Braille by swapping the above keys. It means that the Down key uses the (5) key and the Select key uses the (2) key.

Do not use this option until you have read and understood the Braille Grade 1 or Grade 2 of the tutorial. Obviously, once these keys are swapped, the tutorial will not work as it refers to the original locations of these keys namely Select (5) and Down (2).

'Braille contraction words enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the 'Braille Grade 2 complete words' Key table to enter text.

This key table contains a list of all Braille Grade 2 complete word contractions such as 'knowledge'.

This key table can be used to enter directly any of the contraction complete words but is not required to enter any of these contractions using Braille Grade 2.

The value of this key table is only as a learning tool; for example, the user can navigate this key table in the usual way and using the Braille Help feature, be notified that, for example, to type the word 'knowledge' it is necessary to enter in Braille the letter 'k' contraction which is Braille sign 1-3.

'Braille contraction fragments enabled' CheckBox control

Check this check box to enable the 'Braille Grade 2 word fragments' Key table to enter text.

This key table contains a list of all Braille Grade 2 complete word contractions such as 'ch'.

This key table can be used to enter directly any of the contraction word fragments but is not required to enter any of these contractions using Braille Grade 2.

The value of this key table is only as a learning tool; for example, the user can navigate this key table in the usual way and using the Braille Help feature, be notified that, for example, to type the word fragment 'ch' it is necessary to enter the contraction which is Braille sign 1-6.

When you have finished changing your settings, bring up the Main menu by pressing the Menu key and select the 'OK' menu item to confirm your selection or the 'Cancel' menu item to cancel the operation. SpeakOn shuts down to enable your settings. Restart it again in the usual way.
